Center for Information and Communication Studies, Fudan University (originally named Culture & Communication Research Center, hereafter referred to as the Center) was founded in 1984, and re-structured in Feb 2000.
In Dec 2000, it passed rigorous accreditation and was approved as a key research institute of humanities & social science in universities by China's Ministry of Education. It's the sole key communication research institute among the first batch of 106 bases approved nationally.
After its establishment, especially after it was accredited as a key national research institute, the Center has employed many well learned part-time and full time researchers, produced many quality researches, and cultivated a team of talents. It contributes immensely to the progress and advancement of China’s research in the field of communication, and plays a leading role in journalism and communication research nationally. It has also earned international recognition to some extent.
During the “Tenth Five-Year Plan” period alone, the part-time and full time researchers in the Center undertook more than 70 projects, whose budget approximates 10 million RMB-- on average, the per capita budget hits more than 400 thousand RMB. Among all the undertakings are 10 Ministry of Education Key Institute Major Projects, 4 National Social Science Projects, 13 Ministry of Education Projects, 8 Province-level projects and 4 International Co-operations. Supported and propelled by these research projects, the Center published more than 90 books, more than 500 papers and advisory reports. Its per capita publication reached 1.5 books, 8 papers and reports. Twelve academic awards were endowed, including 3 province-level awards.
Since 2001, the Center started and hosted the Chinese Communication Conference (CCC), the only university-based national academic conference in communication field. This occasion holds impact both in China and abroad, and has become an annual event for Chinese Communication scholars. In 2002 the Center banded together sister universities in China and initiated the Chinese Association of Communication (CAC).
During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, the Center will further sharpen its research orientation and focus, enhance research quality and endeavor to turn out a batch of influential breakthroughs. Meanwhile, the Center shall stick to opening-up, further enhance its influence and radiation, and promote the exchange of Chinese communication researches with the rest of the world. From 2007, the Center will found the “Communication and China Fudan Forum”, which to be held annually, will focus on one specific theme each year. The forum has its mission to build an open academic sphere where scholars of diverse disciplines and nationalities could engage in lively debates about key issues in communication research.
